Using Your Gifts | Usando Tus Dones

Romans 12:5-8

5 so we, though many, are one body in Christ, and individually members one of another.6 Having gifts that differ according to the grace given to us, let us use them: if prophecy, in proportion to our faith; 7 if service, in our serving; the one who teaches, in his teaching;8 the one who exhorts, in his exhortation; the one who contributes, in generosity; the one who leads, with zeal; the one who does acts of mercy, with cheerfulness.

1 Corinthians 12: 14-17

14 For the body does not consist of one member but of many. 15 If the foot should say, “Because I am not a hand, I do not belong to the body,” that would not make it any less a part of the body. 16 And if the ear should say, “Because I am not an eye, I do not belong to the body,” that would not make it any less a part of the body. 17 If the whole body were an eye, where would be the sense of hearing? If the whole body were an ear, where would be the sense of smell?

I remember learning about the second passage in middle school, and thinking how funny it would be for an ear and a foot to fight about their importance. Now, I love the meaning it has for all Christians, and the depth it can take in our lives. These passages show us that even though we are all one body in Christ, we have different paths that God has prepared for us to take.

I am extremely competitive, so I have many thoughts wondering if people are doing better than me, or even if they are “better Christians” than me. Sometimes I even wonder if I am “good enough” for God. As followers of Christ, we can tell that these thoughts are complete lies, because we know that no one is “good enough” for God. According to Ephesians 2:8-9, “For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God, not a result of works, so that no one may boast.”

These passages also bring up the topic of spiritual gifts. By God’s grace we have received various gifts, and each member of the church is responsible for utilizing their own gifts to glorify our Savior. In my life, I have been able to use my gift of teaching kids by serving in children’s ministry, and I am finding new ways to serve with Foster the Bay. For your life, it may look different. I encourage you to take a moment this week and think about what God’s plan for your life is, and how you can use each day to glorify and grow closer to Him.

Romanos 12:5-8
